The Barbie and Ken Killers ~ Part 2
Part 2 I will be focusing on Karla Homolka first, then Paul Benardo, unless it becomes too long, then I will do two separate entries, okay?!!
Karla, was literally, all about Karla at this point. She was refusing to work with police but changed her mind, IF she was offered full immunity.
Thankfully the courts/prosecution absolutely removed that off the table, but they DID offer her a reduced sentence, on the conditions that she would not hide anything from them, nor withhold anything that could potentially affect the outcome of the case.
I can say, THIS caused a lot of controversy in Canada, especially those deeply affected by this whole ordeal...
She accepted the reduced sentence and her husband, Paul Bernardo was arrested shortly thereafter, for all the Scarborough rapes and the killing of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. At this point, they were still not even considering that Tammy, or anyone else, could be victims of these vile beings.
After four days of being interrogated, Karla admitted the truth about her sister, and how Paul had brought Leslie home, after abducting her from her own backyard; she also confessed to being with Paul when they lured and took Kristen French right out of the church parking lot. She blamed both the murders on Paul, revealing that both teens had been used as sexual slaves and tormented; especially Kristen who was forced to watch a live press conference of her father pleading for her return, She admits that Paul bragged about the 30+ rapes he committed in the east end of Toronto/Scarborough.
Karla told the authorities that she was the victim. She was beaten from him all the time; claiming she lived in terror from him.
Due to the Attorney General's deal with the devil... Karla was given a reduced sentence of 12 years and 12 years, both to be served concurrently; and only for manslaughter ... meaning, she would spend the maximum of 12 years behind bars. It wasn't until AFTER her sentencing that the truth was finally out...
My views on this one is this... Karla is by far worse than Paul was. He got permission from her to rape women. She literally made her sister, Tammy a sacrificial lamb for her fiancee to rape and abuse. Karla supplied the drugs. And as you will see in part 3... she knew far more than she shared, which should have made her pact null and void. I still don't understand how the courts didn't toss the deal and charge her to the fullest extent of the law.
I don't even want to really write about this disgusting waste of skin, but he is a HUGE part of this "historical" case...In May 1993, Paul Bernardo's legal team has retrieved somce very incriminating video tapes from the house... tapes that the police somehow missed, repeatedly in searches. These tapes were not shared with the prosecution until the end of September 1994.
Now these killers may have gotten cocky, or felt they could outsmart the law, but they were dumb enough to record all their illegal activities... the drugging and rape of Tammy Homolka. The torture and rapes of both young teenagers, Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. The only thing that the families were spared of, was they actual killing and dismemberment of their babies :(
Because these tapes were revealed so far after Karla's sentencing, most of the country were furious that the "deal with the devil" was staying as it was; Karla was only going to serve 12 years.... Paul, on the other hand...
It wasn't until May 1995 that this case even started to go off. Jury selection first. Eighteen laters, the trial was official on the docket and MAN, what a trial this was!!! It lasted 4 months, fortunately it was only 17 days that the jury or families had to see Paul in the witness box.The results were in and Paul was deemed a dangerous offender who wouldn't likely make bail. He was convicted of two counts of first degree murder, kidnapping, forcible confinement, aggravated assault and one count of committing an indignity to a human body.
Does this feel like justice to you???
My personal feelings on this is that BOTH deserved the death penalty; unfortunately Canada no longer has that as an option. I feel the victims' families were robbed of true justice and it breaks my heart. I hope one day they will be able to find peace... although, if I were in their shoes, I don't think I could ever be at peace.
Stay tuned for updates...
