Death Shift ~ The Tale of the Pediatric Murdering Nurse Genene Jones Part 3.
We know now that Genene Jones was charged and convicted in 1984 for the murder and injury of a child.
I am just going to list all of the charges and sentences; since we don't have an accurate number for her victims, I don't want to leave the families and loved ones of the unknown left off of this.
Shockingly, children were over 10X as likely to die during her 3 PM to 11 PM shift than at any other time in the ICU. All these children were dying under mysterious circumstances. Previously stable kids suddenly stopped breathing. Others had seizures, their hearts stop, or began bleeding profusely when given injected with needles, their blood was unable to clot for some strange reason.
If there is anyone that capital punishment should be reserved for... it's Genene Anne Jones!!!
One of the children LVN Jones took care of, his parents, Diana and Crecencio Hogeda, Jr., were close to. They were expecting the passing of their son at any time. Their baby, Christopher James, barely a year old, had spent almost half his life in the hospital. He was born with a severe heart defect, he had been admitted to the pediatric ICU with pneumonia and diarrhea in December 1980.
In May, he developed hepatitis, and infection ravaged his body.
The call had come from Christopher’s nurse, Genene Jones, who had cared for him from the beginning, who seemed so sympathetic to their ordeal. “He’s gone to play with the angels,” Genene had informed them. After gathering the clothes in which they planned to bury their son—Diana had crocheted a special blanket—the Hogedas climbed in their car and raced toward San Antonio, more than two hundred miles away.
Three hours later, their eyes wet with grief and fatigue, the Hogedas walked into the ICU to view their baby’s remains. They were stunned at what they saw: Christopher was still alive! He was lying quietly on his ICU bed, hooked up to the machines; everything was just as it had been for months. The Hogedas asked for Genene. The other ICU nurses told them that she had completed her shift and gone home.
Is this some cruel joke???
It appeared that Genene had taken a special interest in Christopher, to the point that she was ignoring her own children and was calling Christopher "her boy".
On May 14, 1981, Genene was giving a report on Christopher's condition to the hurses when she went back into his room, but moments later came out screaming, there was a crash and he was just hanging off his crib, only thing holding him in place was his tubes and wires for his heart. Sadly, his life was very short, but in a way, it was a blessing for him; God knows what Nurse Jones was doing to the poor lil guy. Christopher died a week later; and his oblivious parents even invited her to attend their son's funeral.
In 1985, Jones was originally sentenced to 99 years in prison for killing 15-month-old Chelsea McClellan with succinylcholine. Chelsea had only come in for routine vaccinations; instead Genene injected her 3X with succinycholine, causing her heart to stop. She was charged with harming Brandy Benites on August 27, Chris Parker and Jimmy Pearson on August 30, Misty Reichenau on September 3, Jacob Evans on September 17... all in 1985.
All indictments charged that the nurse “intentionally and knowingly” injured the children by injecting them with succinylcholine or some other drug.
Later that year, she was sentenced to a concurrent term of 60 years in prison for nearly killing Rolando Santos with heparin. Rolando was 4 weeks old, when she gave him a lethal dose of the blood thinner, thankfully he survived and she was caught and sentenced to an additional 60 years; but it was the Texas' Mandatory Release Law, that was making many people angry; it meant that Genene Jones could be released in 2018; as prisoners' can use their good behaviour towards time served.
